This week, Andy had a quick catch-up with James Wagstaff, the Men's Football 1 coach, to discuss all things football and the season ahead.
Following a strong start to their BUCS campaign, we spoke about the team's identity, memorable moments, ambitions for the year ahead, and what makes representing Tim Wrecsam so special.
Read on to learn more about the team, their proudest memories, and how you can get involved!
Andy: What three words would you use to describe the team?
James: Togetherness, unit, enjoyment
Andy: Could you tell us a little about your team?
James: We play in BUCS northern tier 6. We have been pushing high near the top of the league the last few years, due to being a small Uni we do not have the luxury of lots of players, so being united and giving our all every week sets us up for success
Andy: What's been your favourite memory over the last few years?
James: Beating Liverpool Hope at Varsity without a doubt. On penalties, away from home, the underdog team, what a day!
Andy: What would you say makes your team special?
James: The fact we aren’t as big as some Uni’s but all the players on the same page, knowing the task in hand and having a real team sprit
Andy: So, you've now kicked off your BUCS campaign. How did the opening fixture go?
James: We beat Bangor 2-1 on the first day, a great result, down to ten men too. Gave us a brilliant platform to move forward
Andy: What have you learnt from that opening match?
James: That we can grind out results when we have a disadvantage and showing that we are happy to win but still play ugly.
Andy: From that, what strengths do you think this year's squad has?
James: We have a great mix of experience and freshness. Also, a great combination of technical players and physically good players who will run themselves into the ground for each other. Combined with attacking flair and technically good footballers it gives us a good foundation
Andy: What are the team's ambitions for the remainder of the season?
James: Win the league!!
Andy: What fixture(s) are you most looking forward to this year?
James: Always look forward to Bangor away. They have a good atmosphere and of course Varsity, always a good day.
Andy: What advice would you give to a student thinking about joining football or any other sports club or society?
James: 100% join and get involved, make good friends and I think it makes the University experience a lot better
Andy: What opportunities are there for students who want to get involved beyond playing?
James: It goes on your CV, it will show commitment, teamwork and communication skills
Andy: Is there anything coming up that students can get involved with? Events etc.
James: There is a hockey and football joint social, a quiz in the SU coming soon!
Andy: Finally, where can students find you or get in touch if they would like to get involved?
James: They can get involved from the Instagram’s of the page which for us is wu_mensfootball
Thank you James, all the best for the season!
